WILLIAMSBURG — Playing at a major league baseball stadium. Now that’s pretty cool.
The Williamsburg baseball team had that opportunity Sunday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri, home to the St. Louis Cardinals.
It wasn’t the first time the Raiders have played there, but it’s also is not quite a yearly tradition. A lot goes into it.
“We didn’t do it there for probably seven, eight years, and then COVID happened and we stopped doing it,” Williamsburg coach Nathan King said. “A lot of things have to align, and it did.”
For the second time in three years the stars aligned. Williamsburg upperclassmen have played at the stadium twice now.
Everyone was on board to make the experience happen again.
“It was a good opportunity,” King said.
The Raiders won the nine-inning exhibition 5-2 against Burlington Notre Dame and got plenty of the players on the field for a big-league experience.
Of the 51 9th-12th graders that traveled, all 34 that were healthy got on the field.
The Raiders arrived in St. Louis a day early to watch the Cardinals slip by the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 in game two of a three-game series.
“It was awesome. The best part for me is getting to watch the best in the world go about their job,” senior Nile Sinn said. “It’s cool to see them do their thing.
“It’s unbelievable what they can do, and it’s something to shoot for on what you want yourself and team to look like in the future.”
