MOUNT VERNON— A total of 29 individually ranked wrestlers were in the field across 14 weight classes at the WaMaC girls’ tournament Friday night in Mount Vernon.
The Williamsburg girls brought nine to compete in the varsity bracket and ended up with three finalists.
As a team, the Raiders placed fifth with 137.5 points.
“Overall we wrestled pretty well,” Williamsburg coach Drew Hinschberger said.
“The last round was a little rough. There’s just little things in matches that ended up costing us, but the good thing is, we can fix those going into next week.”
The Raiders’ first finalist was Hayden Wade at 115 pounds.
Wade won her first two matches by fall and, in the semifinals, got a 13-4 win by major decision over Class 2A No. 12 Ava Hendricks of South Tama.
Wade met up with two-time conference champion and 1A No. 4 Ellie Weets of Vinton-Shellsburg in the final.
After a reversal to start the second, Weets got four nearfall points twice to finish the match with a 17-0 tech fall victory.
The next weight class brought the next finalist for the Raiders at 120.
Keston Spratt, had wins by major decision and fall on the way to the finals. Spratt defeated 2A No. 10 Cadence Pastor of Marion in the semifinals.
Spratt, ranked fourth in 1A, matched up with 2A No. 9 Morgan Krall of Independence in the final.
Krall led 3-1 after a period. Late in the second period, Spratt was close to getting a takedown to make the score 6-5, but good defense from Krall prevented Spratt from completing the move.
Krall finished the match with a pin in the third period.
Spratt, a sophomore, has finished conference runner-up in consecutive seasons.
The last finalist for the Raiders was Cecelia Gryp at 135.
Gryp came in as the top seed and won by fall and decision in her first two matches.
Gryp got up 3-0 in the finals, but South Tama’s Ava Perkins was able to pin Gryp late in the first period.
At 140, Valerie Altenhofen bounced back for a third-place finish after falling in the semifinals for the Raiders.
Altenhofen was ranked ninth in 1A coming into the night.
“Next week is our big goal — making it to the State tournament,” said Hinschberger. “This is just a stepping stone there.“
The Raiders will host a 1A regional Friday. Only the top two finishers in each weightclass will advance to the State meet.
