WILLIAMSBURG — The Raiders dropped their first game in the Terry Curtis Classic, 3-2, against Class 3A No. 6 Central DeWitt. But it wasn’t for a lack of defense.
The Raiders got Saber base-runners in a pickle twice, tagging them out successfully both times, and Williamsburg catcher Henry Simmons also threw out a base-runner in a stolen base attempt in the top of the fourth.
The Terry Curtis Classic is named in honor of Terry Curtis who was a former teacher, administrator and coach at Williamsburg dating back to the 1960s.
Curtis is now in his 62nd season as a baseball umpire and has umpired at 34 state baseball tournaments.
In the top of the first, after a few walks, Central DeWitt scored first off an RBI hit from James Adams.
A bases-loaded walk scored another Sabers run in the top of the fourth.
Wyatt Penniston added one more in off an RBI single in the fifth to make it 3-0.
The Raiders rallied in the sixth.
Cael Moore brought in a run, off a double hit in the right center field gap and eventually scored off a wild pitch making it 3-2 heading to the seventh.
Moore also pitched all seven innings for the Raiders totaling 110 pitches.
“Caleb threw really well today and in his last outing against Solon on Monday,” Williamsburg head coach Nathan King said.
“I thought we played overall really well today as a team too”
Central DeWitt brought in Grant Gregoire in the last inning, and the Raiders went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
“Props to them (Central DeWitt). Their pitcher did a great job,“ King said.
“It was a good high school baseball game.”
Williamsburg was notably without Nile Sinn, who suffered a hamstring injury in a game against Solon Monday and will potentially come back sometime next week.
