Raiders season concludes

JOHNSTON — The Williamsburg girls’ swimming team’s season concluded at the state qualifying meet in Johnston Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders were not able to get an event in the top 32 cutoff across all the qualifying sites Saturday in each event.

“We had a tough draw for regionals placement this year at Johnston with all Des Moines area schools and Sioux City but the team swam great,” Williamsburg head coach Mindy Wuebker said.

“We continued to fight illness and injuries through the end of the season but the girls fought through it, dug deep to reach those goals and beyond.”

Girls’ swimming only has one class statewide.

In the individual events, Emily McGovern notched the Raiders only top 10 finish in the meet placing eighth in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.97.

The Raiders finished seventh of eight teams in all three relays.

All three relays set season bests and individually the Raiders had 11 individual personal bests.

Kya Dobesh dropped 17 seconds in the 500 freestyle and 7.5 seconds in the 200 freestyle.

“Unfortunately, the team fell just shy of qualifying, but still have so much to be proud of,” Wuebker said. “I'm very pleased overall with our season this year. Looking ahead, I am excited to see what next year brings.”

“We have some strong leaders and swimmers returning and it will be fun to see what comes together,” Wuebker said.
