DES MOINES — The Williamsburg boys wrestling team tied with three other Class 2A school for the most state qualifiers, 11.
Class 2A wrestled during the third-session Wednesday night at the Iowa High School Athletic Association Boys State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Three Raiders advanced to the quarterfinals. The first was Riker DeWitt, at 106 pounds.
DeWitt, the eight-seed, had a first-round bye before the second-round match in which he scored a takedown and nearfall points to go up 6-0 after a period.
Vinton-Shellsburg’s Jackson Parmater put up a good fight, but DeWitt won by a 10-3 decision.
“I was pretty happy with that first period, especially since that kid is a good wrestler,” DeWitt said. “He got me at conference, so I was glad I could bounce back.”
DeWitt will face the No. 1 seed, Union’s Coy Mehlert, in the quarterfinals.
“I know I’m expected to be the underdog, but through all the work I’ve put in, I know I can win.”
Nile Sinn, seeded sixth and state place winner last season, also had a bye and won his one match of the day to advance to the quarterfinals.
Sinn won comfortably by major decision over West Delaware’s Lane Gudenkauf.
“It felt good getting into the swing of things a bit,” Sinn said. “Getting a first-round bye, you know that first guy right off the jump is going to be really good.”
No matter how big the match is, the mindset always stays the same for Sinn as he enters day two.
“It’s just another match,” said Sinn on the upcoming quarterfinals. “I’ve wrestled good kids my whole life.”
Sinn will face three-seeded Ayden McRoberts of Sergerant Bluff-Luton.
The last Raiders quarterfinalist took a different path as a higher seed.
Heavyweight Trenton Davies had to win two matches, and he did so, in completely different ways.
He got a first-period fall in the first-round match.
The second match came to sudden victory, in which Davies got a takedown in the very last second of the first overtime.
The win came against a similar opponent, the one that beat Davies at districts in Knoxville’s Regan Roberts.
“It felt great,” Davies said. “I had to trust my shots. I knew I had my underhook good, and he wasn’t stepping with his inside leg. I saw the knee pick was there and lowered my level and drove through.”
The win has 13-seeded Davies feeling confident heading into day two.
“The win makes me even more confident knowing that I can beat anybody.”
It was not the start the Raiders would have hoped for, dropping their first four matches in the first-round, but the back half of the lineup had strong performances winning, all four matches — two by fall.
The wins came from Brady Grier (157), Ethan Prior (165), Carson Grier (215) and Davies (285).
Eight Raiders will begin tonight’s 2A session in the second-round consolations.
Day two consists of second- and third-round consolations and quarterfinal matches.
