Two school records, 19 personal records and the program’s first state qualifiers in nine years.
It was a great day for the Williamsburg girls’ swimming team in last Saturday’s regional championships at Linn-Mar High School.
The Raiders swam faster than they have all season, led by their state-qualifying 200-yard freestyle relay team of Selah Smith, Olivia Kelting, Caitlyn Cronbaugh and Laura Carrico. They placed sixth in 1:45.32, breaking the school record of 1:47.76 set back in 2002 by Stacia Johns, R. Halder, A. Jones and Kelly Marine.
They’re the first Williamsburg state qualifiers since 2014.
The Raiders had five other top 10 finishes in the meet, and scored 158 points to place sixth in the team standings.
Carrico placed fifth in the 50 yard freestyle in 25.48 seconds, breaking her own school record set earlier this season. She finished eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in 0:56.78, just missing the school record of 0:56.38 set by Shelby Doehrmann in 2009.
Williamsburg’s 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams both placed seventh. Kayden Dermody, Elizabeth Stohlmann Gwen Yearian and Kelting swam the medley in 2:13.6, and Smith, Amy Dobesh, Cronbaugh and Carrico went 3:59.77 in the 400 free.
Yearian finished ninth in the 100 yard backstroke in 1:09.01, and Smith was 10th in the 200 individual medley in 2:32.42.
“An amazing meet,” said Williamsburg coach Mindy Wuebker. “The girls swam really well.”
NCSC championship
The Raiders scored 134 points to place fifth out of seven teams in the North Central Swimming Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 14, at Luther College in Decorah.
Highlighting the day for Williamsburg were fourth-place finishes by the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
The Raiders were without the services of Cronbaugh and Carrico, who were attending a band competition.
