SOLON — Two school records on back-to-back days.
The Williamsburg girls golf team shot 666 (335-331) at this year’s Class 3A State Tournament.
The 3A meet was held at Saddleback Ridge Golf Course in Solon.
Both scores were 18-hole school records, as the Raiders finished sixth in a competitive field.
Coming into day two Friday, the Raiders were tied for sixth. They held their position after topping Lisbon by nine strokes Friday.
“We kind of went in with the goal of winning our group of five, which we did,” Williamsburg coach Todd Subbert said.
The top four teams separated themselves from the rest of the field quickly, and the Raiders were just six strokes shy of Des Moines Christian.
“For these guys to come out and beat the school record two times in a row at the state meet is fantastic,” said Subbert. “It totally exceeded anything I could have thought coming in.“
The Raiders were led by a 24th place finish from Mallory Jones, who picked a pretty good time to shoot a lifetime best 18-hole score.
Jones shot an 82 Thursday and matched the score Friday for a 164 on the par-72 course.
“It was really great,” Jones said. “I was hitting the driver really straight. Chipping and putting was good too.”
Jones was in the last pairing of the day Friday and had to battle high wind gusts to close out her round on the front nine.
“The wind wasn’t too bad,” said Jones. “It did mess with yardages a bit, but as long as you know where it was coming from, you can take advantage of it and adjust.”
Jones totaled three birdies in the meet.
“It was a perfect (ending) for her,” Subbert said. “Great kid and could not have been happier for her to finish like that.”
The Raiders’ depth and balance was on display again. Jenna Yearian and Rubianne Allison were only a stroke behind Jones, finishing 26th and 27th with 165s.
Yearian shot a team-low 81 Friday.
Rounding out the Raiders’ scoring was Kenzi Driscoll, who finished 40th with a 172.
The Raiders have had seven straight seasons of qualifying for state either as a team or by an individual. They look to continue that tradition; five of six golfers from this year’s state team return next season.
“The program starts with the junior golf we do,” Subbert said. “It feels good to have that consistency and to have an expectation level set. We’ve been able to build a tradition.”
