The Williamsburg boys’ soccer team opened with a pair of wins, beating Fort Madison 3-2 March 26, and Mid-Prairie 2-0 March 28.
Against Fort Madison, the Raiders got two early goals, but the Bloodhounds tied it up with 26 seconds left.
Mason Eggleston scored as time expired to avoid overtime and pull out the win.
“The guys did a great job of responding,” Williamsburg Coach Ryan Sauser said. “They pulled out a big win to start the season.”
The other goals were scored by Braysen Dohermann and Max Wodiaka. Assists were credited to Conner Westcott and Dohermann.
Against the Golden Hawks, Eggleston continued his clutch play with two goals — one on a fast break, and the other on a PK when Braden Yelland was taken down in the box.
“Mid-Prairie continued to make things difficult for us and kept the game close,” Sauser said.
Girls
The Raider girls lost to Newton 2-0 to open the season March 26 and then bounced back to beat Washington 1-0 March 28.
Payton Carkhuff and Aliviah Ross scored goals for Newton at H.A. Lynn Stadium in Newton.
Details from the win over Washington were not available.
