DES MOINES — They’ve broken their own school record multiple times, so why not one last time?
The Williamsburg girls sprint medley relay team delivered on the final day of the State Track and Field meet Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The Raiders’ quartet topped its previous best again, running 1:47.00, for a runner-up podium finish in Class 3A. Clear Lake won the event with a new 3A state meet record of 1:45.39.
“We’re all ready proud of ourselves,“ Ava Hocker said.
This is the second-straight season the Raiders have finished runner-up in the event, with two of the same seniors on both quartets.
“Our bond is so strong,” senior Makenna Hughes said.
“Hanging out together has been just as much fun as the running part. I’m really grateful I’ve been able to do this with these girls,” senior Ailea Wetjen said.
On the boys’ side, the Raiders medaled in the sprint medley, coming in fifth in 1:33.17.
Two seniors were also on the boys’ quartet — Grant Hocker and Rayce Heitman. Both end their careers with several state medals.
“Can’t really complain. Won a lot, including a state (championship). And ending on a medal isn’t bad either,” Heitman said.
Heitman will be playing football at the University of Iowa this fall and leaves for summer camp in a few weeks.
Wetjen ended competition for the Raiders Saturday, placing seventh in the girls’ 100-meter in a time of 12.45.
The Raiders’ senior closes with a medal in what has been a breakout season.
“I never qualified for an open event until this year, so it was pretty awesome making finals,” said Wetjen. “I’m pretty excited with how it ended.”
Adam Arp finished seventh in the boys’ para wheelchair 100 and sixth in the 200 with a new personal best of 1:01.00.
The girls finished tied for 12th in the team race with 26 points, taking home medals in five events.
The boys finished tied for 21st, with 11 points and three total medals.
