WILLIAMSBURG — Three hours and nine minutes.
That’s how long it took to complete game one of a WaMaC baseball doubleheader between Williamsburg and Grinnell Thursday night.
The Raiders came out on top in 10 innings in a wild, chaotic game, 12-11.
An 8-2 deficit stared down the Raiders heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Tigers scored five runs in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on several errors from the Raiders, a bases-loaded walk and a batter hit by a pitch. They added two more runs in the fifth.
The six-run deficit didn’t last long. The Raiders responded with one of the better two-out rallies you’ll see in the bottom of the fifth. Before it was over, the Raiders had the lead, 9-8.
“It was good to see us fight back,” senior Nile Sinn said. “Earlier in the year, we were going through a rough stretch, and it felt like after that big inning that we’d give up and shut down.
“We stayed dialed in (tonight).”
The runs started with an RBI single from Allan Jaspering. Runs followed on hits from Bowen Stratton, Henry Simmons, Carson Grier and Albert Bamrick.
“When we had two outs, we just kept stringing hits together, and that was huge,” senior Cael Moore said. “We didn’t give up.”
The momentum continued into the sixth with Sinn adding a two-RBI double. The Raiders led 11-8 heading to the seventh.
A Brady Coffman home run started the seventh and, just like that, it was 11-9. A single and two more batters hit by pitches, and the bases were loaded.
Two straight walks tied things up, and the Tigers forced extra innings.
Each team got runners on base in the eighth and ninth, but nothing materialized.
That changed in the bottom of the 10th. Moore got on by walk and advanced to second on a passed ball, which set up the bunt from Logan Schmidt.
The throw to first was errant, and Moore hustled his way to home, barely beating the tag for the victory.
“I was trying to get to the right side (of the bag) since the catcher was on the other side, to avoid the tag,” said Moore of the final play of the game.
Six different players brought in runs, with Grier leading the way with three.
Grinnell took game two, 8-5, for the split.
This was the last time playing at home for five seniors, and coming away with at least one win felt good.
“It was nice to walk away with a win here, since we did senior night last night and that didn’t go well for us,” said Sinn. “I’ve met so many great people.”
“Its been a lot of fun,” Moore added.
One final regular season game awaits Williamsburg Monday at Davenport Assumption before their first-round substate game Friday, July 11 at Benton Community.
