Williamsburg’s girls swam well enough to win last Tuesday’s invitational at Boone.
By default — not having a diving team — they had to settle for third place behind the host Toreadors and Grinnell.
The Raiders, in just the swimming events, scored 354 points, which was enough to win the meet. Add the diving scores, and both Boone (381) and Grinnell (367) leapfrogged them.
“It’s tough to lose when you lose by default,” said Williamsburg Coach Mindy Wuebker. “If [diving] scores were taken out, we win the meet.
“That being said, the kids should be proud of the effort they put in. They had a great swim,” Wuebker said.
Gwen Yearian won the 100 yard butterfly in 1:15.54 to lead the Raiders.
Laura Carrico took runner-up honors in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races in 27.25 and 59.84, and she anchored the 400 freestyle relay team to a second-place finish in 4:19.64. Joining her were Kya Dobesh, Selah Smith and Caitlyn Cronbaugh.
Cronbaugh added a second place in the 200 yard individual medley in 2:39.44, and she finished third in the 100 yard backstroke in 1:14.14.
Also placing third were Dobesh in the 200 yard freestyle (2:24.95) and 500 yard freestyle (6:26.26), Smith in the 200 yard IM (2:39.81) and Dobesh, Olivia Kelting, Cronbaugh and Carrico in the 200 freestyle relay (1:53.67).
Smith in the 100 backstroke, Mia Becker in the 100 butterfly and Elizabeth Stohlmann in the 100 yard breast stroke all finished fourth.
