DES MOINES — HLV-TC’s Ema Roberts went down in history on day two of the State Track and Field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Roberts repeated as the Class 1A girls’ high jump champion, after being the only one in the field to clear five feet, five inches.
What she did after, even surprised herself.
Roberts soared past her previous best by two and a half inches and set the 1A state meet record in the process after clearing five feet, nine and a half inches.
“I knew I definitely had a personal best coming, and I knew the state record was close for me to get, but I never expected to go 5-9 1/2,” Roberts said.
“Throwing it back to Drake (Relays), I was scared to even see big bars.”
The previous 1A meet record was 5 feet, 8 1/4 inches.
After clearing five feet, seven inches, Roberts casually went up to her eventual record.
“I was speechless honestly,” said Roberts. “After I cleared it, I just collapsed on the mat. I was just so happy.”
Minutes after the feat, Roberts had to warm up for the 4x400-meter relay. The Warriors qualified for today’s finals, and Roberts will also run the 200 final today.
The HLV-TC girls also made the podium in the distance medley relay Friday, running a season best of 4:12,76. Roberts was part of that team as well.
Emery Hall closed hard with a 2:16 800-meter split to seal the Warriors’ third place finish.
“We were hoping for the podium at least,” 200-meter leg Ayla Hall said. “We just ran so much more (harder) to make sure we could get that.”
Iowa Valley’s Lydia Kriegel rounded out the medalists honors for area athletes in the 1A girls’ field Friday, placing third in the shot put.
Kriegel threw a personal best throw of 137 feet to cap off what has been a storied career for the Tigers’ senior.
“I’m so thankful to be up there again on the podium. I know it wasn’t first, but I’m still so happy,” Kriegel said. “The competition this year was amazing, and now I’m ready to see what I can do in college.”
Kriegel is set to attend Wartburg and will throw for the track and field team.
Montezuma nearly placed in the 4x200-meter relay, coming in 10th with a season best of 1:49.17.
