Roth leads returners for Warriors
Team hopes to improve on 10th place conference finish

VICTOR — The HLV-TC boys track and field team placed 10th at the South Iowa Cedar League meet last season, with 25 team points.
The team returns a lot of important contributors and will try and push an event to state this season.
The top returner is middle-distance runner Peyton Roth. Roth qualified for state cross-country in the fall and placed in the 800-meter run both at conference and the state qualifying meet last season with fifth and seventh place finishes.
Roth is also coming off a great individual season in basketball.
“Peyton will be a key middle distance runner for the team,” HLV-TC coach Chase Sternhagen said. “We hope to see competitive times in the 800 and 1600.”
Tristan Pirkl will also contribute at middle distances this season.
Aidan VanWaus also placed as an individual in the conference meet last season, in the 200-meter.
“He came off an ACL tear last year so we are excited to see his times this year,“ said Sternhagen. ”He has been looking strong at practice and we are excited to see how he does.“
The team’s highest relay finish at the conference meet last season was fourth place in the 4x400 relay.
A key cog in returning relays this season is Sean McCulloch, who also has jumping abilities in the field side of things.
Newcomer Ashad Powell try to make an impact in his first season with the team, Sternhagen said.
“We hope to have a strong season this year and continue growing the team,” Sternhagen said. “We have a great group this year and will set goals as a team as the season progresses.
“Our goal is for the team to continue to improve and achieve both their individual and team goals.”
The Warriors will run two indoor meets at Wartburg College before kicking off their outdoor season April 31 at Meskwaki Settlement.
