Rural Malcom business owner helps others live better

MALCOM — Helping others is something a rural Malcom business owner takes to heart.
Nolan Ferry, owner of Panoptic Inspections at 4498 U.S. Highway 63, said his goal is making the house and property buying experience better for all involved.
“It’s all about educating people and helping them make the best decisions,” said Ferry.
Ferry offers residential and commercial inspections, sewer scopes, radon testing, pest inspecting, water quality testing and mold inspections.
“I can do pretty much anything inspection wise other than lead testing,” Ferry said.
Ferry calls himself a jack of all trades. His training and work experience have taught him how to identify deficiencies and safety concerns when inspecting a home.
Ferry also offers home monitoring and related services for people who winter in the south or need someone to check on their homes while they’re away on a vacation.
A native of the Quad Cities, Ferry holds a bachelor’s of business degree from the University of Dubuque.
After college, Ferry landed in upstate New York, taking a job with Jeld-wen as a door-to-door door replacement salesman.
“I went into people’s homes and sold them new doors,” he said.
After a year in New York, Ferry was promoted to a regional manager position with Jeld-wen and he relocated to Denver.
It was there that he met his wife, Crystal, around 2011. They relocated to Cedar Falls and then to the Malcom and Montezuma area a few years ago.
The couple has four children.
Prior to opening Panoptic Inspections, Ferry spent four years working in the construction field. When COVID hit in 2020, the company downsized, and Ferry thought it was a good opportunity to start his own business.
He happened to have a business connection with a job counselor who gave him advice and guidance in starting his own business.
He opened Panoptic Inspections in July 2020.
When asked about the importance of having a home or business inspected, Ferry said it is important to have someone with an impartial view look at the property to provide a fair overview of potential maintenance, safety and other concerns.
Ferry said he works hard to make sure customers feel comfortable and have all their questions and concerns answered during the home inspection process.
A typical home inspection takes about 2.5 hours. A full visual report of the inspection is delivered within 24 hours of the inspection.
“I got in this business to help people,” said Ferry. “I don’t ever want to do anything else. I just enjoy what I do.”
