GRINNELL — In May, UnityPoint Health— Grinnell Regional Medical Center honored Dawn Scanlon, with The DAISY Award.
The award — given annually to a GRMC nurse — is part of The DAISY Foundation’s mission to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate nursing care that nurses provide patients and families every day.
“The care I received from Dawn seemed effortless,” says a patient who nominated Scanlon. “She was caring, compassionate, supportive, encouraging and literally anticipated my every need.
“Since my hospital stay, I have often found myself thinking about the care she provided. As a nurse myself, she has set a new standard of the nurse I want to be.”
Scanlon has been with GRMC for nearly six years, primarily serving in the intensive care unit and stepping in to support other departments as needed. Scanlon received The DAISY Award in a surprise ceremony alongside her team and leaders.
“I am honored to be The DAISY Award winner, especially among such an outstanding group of nominees,” says Scanlon. “I am proud to represent a hospital that honors the diversity of our patient population and not only accommodates but celebrates differences. I truly enjoy working in my small town hospital.”
The DAISY Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. Barnes died in 1999 at the age of 33 from complications of an auto-immune disease.
DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.
