MARENGO — The Iowa Valley School Board accepted a bid from Timm Electric of Brooklyn for the electrical work for the district’s building upgrades.
Sitelogiq, architects for the three-year remodeling project, recommended the district accept the $110,831 bid. S & Electric in Grinnell and Van Maannen Electric in Newton also bid on the project.
The district had budgeted $300,000 for the electrical work, said Iowa Valley Superintendent Curt Rheingans. “So far everything has come in favorable to us.”
The electrical panel was not bid with the rest of the project because Sitelogiq was concerned with the long lead-time for it. The panel needs to be here by June, said Sitelogiq’s Geoff Miller.
The school district is using Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund for part of the building upgrades. Second-floor windows and exterior doors have been replaced, and first floor windows should be done before the snow flies, Rheingans told the school board last week.
Bonds will pay for roofing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, tuck pointing, ceiling tiles and lighting and other upgrades.
The cabinets that the district ordered in July have still not arrived, said Rheingans. He suggested that the board order the cabinets for the elementary school in December to make sure they arrive in time for the remodel.
Renovation of the auditorium is scheduled for this fall and winter, but Rheingans said that be delayed until roofing is completed. The auditorium remodel will be paid for with funds from Physical Plant and Equipment Levy and donations.
The capital improvements to the district’s buildings are scheduled through the summer of 2025, but Rheingans said the timeline is tentative.
Remodeling and roofing of the art room are in progress, concrete for the new bus barn is complete. The high school career and tech center and ag tech building, high school offices and nurse’s office, teacher’s lounge and both cafeterias are scheduled for upgrades in 2024.
Junior high and high school classrooms and elementary school offices, the elementary playground surface, band and choir rooms and kindergarten and first grade bathrooms will be upgraded in 2025.
“It’s going to be exciting,” the superintendent said, but it’s going to be stressful.
