Schropp takes title at 113 pounds

Williamsburg’s boys enjoyed a pretty solid afternoon hosting the WaMaC wrestling tournament Saturday.

The Raiders finished sixth in the 12-team event, and crowned one champion — Lincoln Schropp at 113 pounds.

“It was fun,” Schropp said. “Honestly, I told myself, just don’t get frustrated, and keep working hard.

“It feels good to win, especially in front of the home crowd,” Schropp said.

Nile Sinn (150), Cael Moore (175) and Carson Grier 285) also made the finals but finished runner-up. Kyler Provin (126) and Bryan Riedel (190) finished third.

“You look at where we were at the beginning of the season, we were kind of struggling a little bit,” Williamsburg Coach Grant Eckenrod said. “But we’re feeling good right now. I’m proud of where we’re at.”

The Raiders started slow, coming off a championship football run deep into November. But they earned a spot in the regional duals Tuesday, Jan. 30, even if it was as the last team in the 24-team Class 2A field.

“We’ve got nothing to lose,” Eckenrod said. “We can wrestle free and get after people.”

Last week, Williamsburg won three duals Thursday, Jan. 25 in Washington. The Raiders beat Keokuk (63-11), Oskaloosa (63-14) and Washington (58-18).

“We started the year kind of slow, everyone was uncertain of us,” Schropp said. “Now we’re getting dangerous.”

Five female Williamsburg wrestlers qualified for the state tournament during Regional Qualifier 8 Friday in Mason City.

Madison Kirby (115), Keston Spartt (120), Riann Holt (130), Valerie Altenhofen (140) and Phoenix Gryp (145) will compete for a state title starting Feb. 1 in Coralville.

Kirby and Gryp won titles.
