MONTEZUMA — Poweshiek County Historical and Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, May 1, at 1:30 p.m. in the lower level of the Carnegie research library building located at 200 South Third Street, Montezuma.
A handicapped entrance can be found on the south side of the building.
The program will be about growing up in Searsboro. Everyone interested in this event is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.
Poweshiek County Historical and Genealogical Society is a volunteer organization interested in preserving Poweshiek County history. The group maintains three buildings located on a corner of the courthouse square in Montezuma.
A country schoolhouse that was moved from Scott township is completely furnished with original items. The museum is housed in the former Poweshiek County sheriff's office, including the jail cells. These seem to be of interest to many visitors.
The 100-year-old Carnegie building holds the genealogy research library. Over 500 family history stories are located on shelves and available to visitors.
Staff will assist in researching family names of early Poweshiek County residents. Volunteers are on hand Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are happy to open the museum and school for visitors.
Other times can be available by appointment. Call 641-623-3322 and leave a call back message as staff may be busy helping visitors.
