Senate, House fail to move farm bill
Sep. 16, 2024 2:05 pm
During the week of Sept. 9, I was part of the Iowa Farmers Union’s delegation visiting Iowa Congressional Offices in Washington, D.C.
Other farm organizations also participated in the visits. These visits aimed to persuade Congress to pass a crucial new Farm Bill, as farm profit margins are slim to negative, and farmers need relief.
Unfortunately, the Senate and House leadership are failing to work out a compromise to move the Farm Bill forward.
Currently, the market value of corn and soybeans is decreasing while input costs are rising. This leads to slim negative profit margins for farmers, which has a profound ripple effect on Poweshiek County's economy.
The decline in farmers' real-dollar incomes affects numerous other county businesses, highlighting the need for immediate action.
With farmers facing economic headwinds, it’s even more important that farmers travel a good county road system that is maintained to provide the ongoing infrastructure that farm communities rely on to do business.
As a county supervisor, I want county road maintenance as a priority.
