BROOKLYN — Seven area boys’ wrestlers were crowned champions at the Corky Stuart Invite Saturday in Brooklyn.
Twelve teams competed in the tournament.
The top bracket for area teams was the 150-pound division. Iowa Valley's Chance Hoyt (21-2), BGM's Brock York (21-2) and HLV-TC's Cael Weisskopf (17-4) were the top seeds.
All came in with solid seasons so far, but only one could win in the nine-man field.
Weisskopf defeated York in the semifinals by an 8-0 major decision and met with Chance Hoyt in the final. Hoyt won the final by a 10-0 major decision.
Hoyt was named most outstanding wrestler of the tournament by a vote of coaches.
Iowa Valley produced six other finalists and three other champions — Mason Hoyt (165), Josh Read (190) and Ian Smith (215).
Mason won with a second-period pin, Read by a gritty 3-0 decision and Smith by a 13-9 decision over BGM’s Reed Slater.
“We did a good job of continuing to wrestle through situations today and believe in their training,” Iowa Valley coach Jeremy Kriegel said. “We had a really good week of practice, which helped out a lot today.”
The Tigers won the team title in the tournament, scoring 200.5 match points.
BGM, outside of Slater at 190, had one other finalist and two champions.
Hunter Nusbaum (132) won all three matches on the day by fall, including a second-period pin against Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Keagan Blair in the final.
Hunter Hodina won the round-robin tournament at 113.
Hodina dominated in all four of his matches, with three pins in under a minute and a 17-1 tech fall victory.
“They both did a really good job of moving on their feet and dictating the pace of the match,” BGM coach Dalton Roberts said. “They do a really good job controlling the match.”
The Bears finished second in match points with 143.
“I thought we wrestled really well today, and we got a good opportunity to see some district opponents,” Roberts said.
HLV-TC had one finalist in addition to Weisskopf. That was Landyn Ankrum at 144.
Ankrum came into the day with a 10-10 record and captured his first ever tournament win, defeating Independence’s Logan Bevans by a 7-1 decision in the finals.
“It feels really good,” Ankrum said following the tournament. “I’ve worked really hard this year and have come really far.”
The win provided Ankrum with some confidence heading into the rest of the season.
The Warriors scored 63 points among their seven competing wrestlers at the tournament.
“We wrestled decent today, we just had some give-and-takes at some different places,“ HLV-TC coach Beau Jack said. “We had some pretty decent practices over break and broke some rust off on our duals Thursday, but they wrestled really hard today.”
