MARENGO — It’s pretty clear where the strength of the Iowa Valley boys’ wrestling team resides.
The six weight classes from 150 pounds to 215 went 18-0 at the Tigers’ home quad Tuesday night. Take out the forfeits, the mark is 12-0.
Within those six weight classes, are several Tigers’ wrestlers who have moved up a few weight classes this season.
“I feel strengthwise they’re good. They’ve just got to learn more on how to wrestle with those heavier kids more,” Iowa Valley coach Jeremy Kriegel said.
“You’re not going to get away with as much stuff, and you’ve got to be more crisp with your technique.”
Chance Hoyt (150) and Nolan Kriegel (175) wrestled 138 and 157 last season. Although adjustments are still being made, both have looked strong out the gate at their new weights.
“It’s a little different, the kids are a lot bigger and stronger,” Nolan said on wrestling at 175. “I’ve had to change my pace a little bit and be a little quicker, and I just need to work on finishing matches stronger.”
Kriegel was a state qualifier at 157 last season and carries the same goal this season, with the bigger goal of making the podium.
Kriegel pinned all three opponents Tuesday, two in the first period.
Hoyt agreed that one of the biggest adjustments has been dealing with stronger guys.
The 150-pounder won his matches in three different ways Tuesday, one by forfeit, one by decision and the last by fall.
In that last match, against Tipton’s Max Lashmit, Hoyt was down 3-0, but used a nice reversal to cut the lead to 3-2 after a period.
Hoyt extended the lead to 10-4 after two periods and finished with a pin with two seconds remaining.
The pin sealed the team dual victory.
“It felt good because (Coach) Kriegel told me we needed a pin there,” Hoyt said. “I was doing my best to get a pin and got it at the end. It was a tough-fought match.”
Hoyt is hoping he can add more moves to his arsenal as the season goes on and help bring the team another conference championship.
The other four Tigers from 150 to 215 are Dane Smith (157), Mason Hoyt (165), Josh Read (190) and Ian Smith (215).
Dane Smith wrestled 150 at the conference meet last season, and Ian Smith wrestled at 165. Read is also up a couple weight classes from his freshman season.
In the first dual of the night, Tigers’ heavyweight Jackson Slaymaker got the crowd going early against Lynnville-Sully.
Down 1-0 going into the third, Slaymaker got a takedown and four near-fall points. Slaymaker won by a 10-3 decision, adding another takedown.
The Hawks won four of six non-forfeited matches in the dual, but the Tigers won the dual because of all the forfeits at open weights.
The other two duals of the night had far fewer forfeits due to open weights against Class 2A Albia and Tipton.
The Tigers got off to a hot start in their dual against the Blue Demons, winning six of the first seven.
The Blue Demons then won six straight matches, five by fall.
The Tigers fell 39-35.
In the final dual of the night against Tipton, the Tigers jumped out to a 33-0 lead.
Then Tipton won five straight by fall, making the score 33-30.
Dane Smith closed out the night with a last-second pin of Kendrick Heffernan to close out the Tigers’ 2-1 evening.
“The effort is always there. They wrestle hard,” Kriegel said. “It’s just wrestling through some positions we know we need to able to wrestle through and working on conditioning.”
“It was nice to get back out on the mat,” Kriegel said. “Our guys were itching to do that.”
The team had a week off because a tournament set for last Saturday was canceled due to ice.
