NORTH ENGLISH —English Valleys opened the 2023 football season last Friday night with a convincing 62-48 win over Calamus-Wheatland at Tim Carson Field in North English.
The offensive shootout featured eight touchdowns and 555 total yards by the Bears and seven TDs and 447 yards by the Warriors.
Senior quarterback Myles Grove was the offensive catalyst for EV, doing damage both on ground and through the air.
Grove rushed 35 times for 334 yards and four touchdowns, including a 73-yard crowd pleaser, and he completed 4 of 8 passes for 74 yards and three more TDs – all to senior Keyden Lowen.
Senior Ben Coffmanm also had a 100-yard night rushing for the Bears, gaining 133 yards on 19 carries with one TD. Coffman and Deshon Anderdson scored two, 2-point conversions apiece.
All of EV’s scoring was done in the last three quarters after falling behind 7-0. The Bears put up 22 points in the second period to grab a 22-13 halftime lead, and then tallied 20 points in each of the third and fourth quarters.
The Bears did play some defense at times, forcing five Calamus-Wheatland turnovers – two interceptions by senior Coen Good, one by junior Drake Axmear and fumbled recoveries by sophomore Cael Grove and junior Korbyn Brecht.
One of Good’s interceptions was a pick six, and Grove collected a team-high 14 tackles, 11 of those solo stops.
With win number one under their belts, EV will play its next two games on the road, going to Miland, Wyoming, Friday, Aug. 25, and HLV, Victor, Friday, Sept. 1.
The Bears return home Friday, Sept. 8, to face Iowa Valley.
