WILLIAMSBURG — After competition season in January and February, the Williamsburg show choir will relax a little and concentrate on entertaining.
Sound Attraction will present its full competition show to a less judgmental audience at the annual Dessert Cabaret this weekend.
Sound Attraction shares a lot of students with the school jazz band, said director Zach Ring before practice on a Monday evening. Show choir competes in January and February and jazz band in February and March.
Sound Attraction didn’t place in its four competitions, but as one of the top six in one of the competitions, the show choir was allotted an extra performance.
The choir set its goals for the season at the end of December, said Ring. The students asked if Ring would shave his sideburns if they made the finals. They were thrilled to reach that milestone, Ring said.
The students had also asked if Ring would shave his head if they won any of the competitions. The director said he would, but that didn’t happen this year. Maybe next season.
Sound Attraction is made up of about 40 students, said Ring. Its show this season was called “A Day in Hollywood” and featured “Another Day of Sun,” from the movie “La La Land,” Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” and the closer, a medley with Fergie’s “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody.”
Sound Attraction lost 10-15 students to graduation. “We had a really big senior group last year,” said Ring. Other students had to step into leadership roles this year, he said.
The weather created challenges for the show choir this year. Cancellations due to snow and ice cut into rehearsal time right in the middle of competition season, said Ring.
Another challenge is keeping the students’ minds on task as the school year winds down, said Ring. They’ve struggled to settle down after spring break.
Saturday’s Dessert Cabaret will feature the show choir and both high school jazz bands at 1 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. at Williamsburg High School.
The matinee will include the junior high jazz band and show choir and some acts from the speech club that made state and all-state.
Smaller high school vocal groups, Sirens and EnHarmony, will also perform.
