DES MOINES — Williamsburg’s Nile Sinn has made a statement in his two matches so far at the Iowa High School Athletic Association Boys State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
On Thursday, in the Class 2A session, the Raiders senior dominated three-seeded Ayden McRoberts of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the 150-pound quarterfinals, by a 12-1 major decision.
The win puts Sinn in today’s semifinals, clinching medal placement.
Sinn will face two-seed Mikey Ryan in the semifinals, a familiar opponent.
The Raiders’ other two quarter finalists, Riker DeWitt (106) and Trenton Davies (285), were defeated and will wrestle in the fourth-round consolations today.
The other eight wrestlers for the Raiders had to wrestle through two rounds of consolations for a chance to move to day three.
Three succeeded in doing so.
The first was Ethan Prior at 165.
Prior, a 20-seed, won his first consolation by fall and the match to advance to Friday in a nail-biter.
The match with Clear Lake’s Raif Baack was 1-1 heading into sudden victory. Prior was able to get a takedown for the win.
After losing his first match of the tournament, Cael Moore, at 190, has responded strongly with two wins by fall to advance to today.
Carson Grier, at 215, had wins by fall and major decision to keep his medal hopes alive.
Brady Grier was able to get one consolation win at 157 by fall but fell in the third-round consolations, closing out his freshman season with a 35-14 record.
Charlie Foster (113), Hayden Albaugh (120), Lincoln Schropp (126) and Sawyer Kirby (144) were all defeated in the second-round consolations.
Day three will consist of fourth-round consolations, semifinals and fifth-round consolations.
A win in the fourth-round consolations clinches medal placement and advancement to the final day of the tournament.
