Iowa Department of Natural Resources
Aug. 5, 2024 7:43 am
Smokey Bear turns 80 Aug. 9.
In 1944, Smokey Bear started helping the U.S. Forest Service inform the public about the importance of fire safety. Smokey's message, “Only you can help prevent wildfires,” is as relevant and urgent today as it was in 1944.
Smokey will greet visitors at the Department of Natural Resources building at the Iowa State Fair from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, August 9.
Smokey helpers will give out Smokey swag bags until they are gone and will create Smokey tattoos. Smokey has a special gift for anyone 14 or younger whose birthday is also Aug. 9.
The public will sing “Happy Birthday” to Smokey at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Lesvia Juarez, from Des Moines Public Library, will read "Little Smokey" with the help of Rosie the Reader, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Smokey trivia begins at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
