MARENGO — The Montezuma girls track and field had only about half its roster available at the Ruth Ahrens Invitational in Marengo Monday night.
Of the 24 team points scored by the Bravettes, Chloe Snook was a part of nearly all of them.
Snook, a five-time state qualifier, is the Bravettes’ lead sprinter, who also dabbles in long jump and several relays.
On Monday, in super-windy conditions, Snook placed third in the 100-meters, fourth in the long jump and ran a leg on the 4x100 and sprint medley relays, which placed third and second.
It was the Bravettes third competition of the season.
“It’s been like every other start to the season, kind of slow and getting back into it,” Snook said.
Snook’s experience and contributions to the team are evident on the track, but the junior also feels she has grown as a leader.
“With being a junior now, I’ve helped some of the underclassmen understand what to do and how to work together as a team, especially in relays,” said Snook.
“It’s an individual sport, but being together as a team and family makes a big difference.”
The South Iowa Cedar League is competitive on both sides this season, providing Snook with plenty of competition in the sprints and jumps.
“The competition helps me push a lot harder and gives me an opportunity to see where I’m at,” said Snook.
While Snook still has goals to quality again as an individual, she hopes she won’t be going alone this time around.
“Goals are to try and qualify at least one relay to state and get new personal bests,” Snook said.
Williamsburg won the team title in Marengo Monday, scoring 176 team points and winning six events.
Edie Axmear won her first race of the season in the 1,500, in a time of 5:32.67. Axmear outkicked North Mahaska’s Emmerson Jedlicka for the victory.
Ava Hocker, in the 400, and Channing Becker in the 3,000 had the Raiders’ other individual event victories.
HLV-TC placed second with 93 points and took home victories in five events.
Ema Roberts and Ayla Hall went one-two in the 200-meter, and Aaliyah Cooper won the 400 hurdles in close battle in a time of 1:09.83. Emery Hall won the 800.
English Valleys earned three event titles, including the 4x100 and 4x200 relays titles. Ava Gehrking won the 100 in 12.75.
Lydia Kriegel swept the throwing events for Iowa Valley. Maeci Marshall placed third in the long jump.
Belle Plaine totaled 13 points on the night. The Plainsmen’s highest individual finish came from Camella Walton in the 100 hurdles. In relays, the Plainsmen were fourth in the 4x200.
