English Valleys sweeps Keota
KEOTA — The English Valleys volleyball team swept Keota in a conference match in Keota Monday night.
Ava Gehrking led the team in kills, slamming through eight, and Hadyn Bender led the team in assists, with 17.
The Bears took the first two sets by tight margins of 25-23 and 25-22 before winning with comfort in the third set, 25-14.
The following night, the Bears played in a triangular at Louis-Muscatine, going 1-1 on the evening.
Plainsmen get big conference win
SIGOURNEY — Belle Plaine volleyball got a big conference win over Sigourney in five sets Monday night in Sigourney.
The match victory kept the Plainsmen undefeated in conference play and atop the SICL West division.
Kayleah Laughlin had 20 kills, and Allison Hoover had 35 assists.
The teams alternated winning sets one through four, and the Plainsmen took the fifth set, winning 15-8.
The Plainsmen added another conference win at home Thursday against Keota to remain undefeated in conference play.
Tigers win at Colo-Nesco
CRESCO — Getting swept the night before, the Iowa Valley volleyball team bounced back Tuesday night to sweep Colo-Nesco.
The Tigers’ margin of victory grew in each set. They won the final set by 18, 25-7.
Lydia Kriegel had 14 kills, and the team had 22 aces — from seven different players — on the night.
The Tigers almost pulled the upset Thursday in a match against Sigourney, falling in five sets.
Raider swimmers compete at Kennedy
CEDAR RAPIDS — Due to a large roster, not all of the Williamsburg girls’ swimming team competed Tuesday at Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Of the four competing teams, the Raiders finished second with a score of 251.
Jordan Hunt and Shiloh Smith both set personal records in the 100 yard freestyle, Hunt by seven second and Smith by two.
The team competes at Grinnell Tuesday.
Raiders go 1-1 in conference play
WILLIAMSBURG — After getting swept by Clear Creek Amana Tuesday, the Williamsburg volleyball team swept South Tama Thursday in three sets at home.
After a close first set, the Raiders won the next two comfortably.
Clarissa Suhr led with 13 kills. Her sister, Kylee Suhr, and Ava Hocker had seven.
Hocker also added eight aces in the match.
BGM goes 2-1 at home
BROOKLYN — The Bears volleyball team hosted five other teams in a tournament Saturday at home.
The team went 2-1 on the day defeating Baxter and Twin Cedars in two sets.
Ana Coleman led the team in kills in the three matches with 11.
Iowa Valley defeated the Bears in three sets in their lone match loss with a third set score of 15-12.
First playoff spots clinched
The Belle Plaine, Iowa Valley and Montezuma football teams have all officially cinched a spot in the 8-player playoffs.
Thirty-two spots are available with automatic bids to teams that finish in the top three in all ten districts. Two more teams will be selected to join them in postseason play.
