Braves win season opener
LYNNVILLE — The Montezuma boys’ basketball team started its season with a win at Lynnville-Sully Tuesday.
The Hawks were winners of the South Iowa Cedar League West Division last season with a 24-2 record.
Brady Boulton led the Braves with 26 points and added six steals.
In the first game of the night, the girls’ team got a victory over the Hawks, winning 51-41.
Shiressa Wetering led with 12 points.
Gorsh wins bracket at Fort Madison
FORT MADISON— English Valleys’ Anna Gorsh won the 120-pound division at the Fort Madison Girls Wrestling Invitational Monday.
Gorsh had three first-period pins on her way to the final match which she won by injury default over Eddyville Blakesburg Freemont’s Kate Krause.
Emily Sieren placed third at 105 for the Bears.
Tigers go 3-0 at opening dual
VICTOR — The Iowa Valley boys’ wrestling team started its season strong in a quad dual at HLV Thursday night.
“This team was definitely ready to wrestle someone different,” Iowa Valley coach Jeremy Kriegel said. “They have been working their tails off for the last couple of weeks.”
The Tigers defeated BGM 45-25, HLV 60-12 and English Valleys 57-18.
“We need to keep improving and focusing on the little things that will make us better individually throughout the season,” Kriegel added.
Eight Tigers went 3-0 on the night.
Three of the four teams also competed in tournaments Saturday. Iowa Valley was at Jesup, HLV at Wapsie Valley and English Valleys at Wapello.
Bears drop close battle to Tigerhawks
COLFAX — The BGM boys’ basketball team dropped a close battle to Colfax-Mingo Friday night, 50-47.
Beau Burns led the Bears with 14 points.
The girls’ team fell to the Tigerhawks, 45-33.
Raiders beat ranked Stormin Pointers
CENTER POINT — The Williamsburg girls’ basketball earned a second win over a ranked opponent this season. The Raiders defeated Class 3A No. 14 Center Point-Urbana 49-42 Friday night to move to 3-0 on the season.
The seventh-ranked Raiders defeated Burlington, 67-45, in their home opener Tuesday.
Carly Rich and Zoe Allen each scored 13 points.
Plainsmen win at English Valleys
NORTH ENGLISH — In the final game of their three-game road trip to start the basketball season, the Belle Plaine Plainsmen beat English Valleys 70-64 Friday night.
“We have a lot of new faces trying to mesh together,” Belle Plaine coach Brant DeMeulenaere said. “Each game is getting better.”
The Plainsmen girls’ lost to English Valleys by a score of 54-11.
Hawkins wins at Wapello
WAPELLO — Iowa Valley’s Raelene Hawkins won the 170-pound bracket at the 3rd Annual Willard Howell Girls Wrestling Invite Saturday.
Hawkins won all three of her matches by pin.
Teammate Kodie Holcomb finished runner-up at 145.
Westerdale, Weisskopf place 4th
FAIRBANK — Four HLV boys’ wrestlers competed at the Chris Davis Invitational Saturday.
The 157-pounder, Cael Weisskopf, and Mason Westerdale at 215 placed fourth for the Warriors.
Sankot twins win brackets
WOODWARD — Will and Wade Sankot won their brackets at the Dennis Field Invitational Saturday.
At 150 pounds, Will won the championship match by a 7-3 decision over Woodward-Granger’s Kinnick Grimm.
At 157, Wade won by major decision, 16-8, over Saydel’s Trenton Vessells.
Fielding only eight wrestlers, the Belle Plaine boys totaled 139 match points, the second most of any competing team.
