Tigers win big over Warhawks
COLFAX — The Iowa Valley boys’ basketball team had a strong start to new year, defeating Colfax-Mingo Friday night, while only holding the team to 19 points.
Caleb Haack posted a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Owen Ary and Noah Etzel each added 10.
The Tigers fell in the girls’ game 47-35.
Roth scores 40 in win
VICTOR — HLV-TC’s Peyton Roth scored 40 points, on 12-20 shooting, in a win over English Valleys Friday night 58-45.
The win put the boys’ basketball team back at .500 for the season (4-4).
Roth also had 10 rebounds and five steals. Levi Molyneux had eight points.
In the girls’ game, the Bears took the victory 42-30, splitting their games on the season.
Ava Gehrking led the Bears with 18 points. Lily Randall had 11 for the Warriors.
Plainsmen swept at North Mahaska
NEW SHARON — The North Mahaska basketball teams swept Belle Plaine Friday night by big margins.
The boys’ final score was 74-39. Asher DeBoef had 28 points for the Warhawks.
The girls’ final score was 65-7 as Class 2A second ranked Warhawks remained undefeated.
Raiders fall to ranked Mustangs
WILLIAMSBURG — Another game and another ranked opponent greeted the Williamsburg girls’ basketball team in the new year.
This time, they moved up a class in an out-of-conference matchup against Class 4A No. 7 Dallas Center-Grimes.
The Raiders kept it close at half, but the Mustangs pulled away in the third winning 59-41.
Hawkins wins at Megan Black Invite
EDDYVILLE — The Iowa Valley girls’ wrestling team had a strong performance Friday at the Megan Black Invite.
Raelene Hawkins won the 170-pound title, defeating Chariton’s Chloe Ruepke in the first place match by fall.
Skyler Hoyt (125) and Kodie Holcomb (140) both finished third for the Tigers.
Eva Kriegel (110) placed fifth.
Raiders get non-conference victory
WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg boys’ basketball team got a non-conference victory at home over Fort Madison Saturday, winning 59-57.
The Raiders fought off a fourth quarter surge from the Bloodhounds, and the win put the Raiders at 3-4 on the season.
Lint goes 5-0 at Holiday Brawls
BROOKLYN — BGM’s Amiah Lint went 5-0 at their home Holiday Brawl tournament Saturday in the 110-pound division.
Taya Sincox (130) and Shyla VanNevel (120) both finished runner-up for the BGM girls’ wrestling team.
At the same, the BGM boys’ wrestling team also hosted a dual tournament, in which they went 2-2 on the day.
The Bears defeated Louisa-Muscatine 40-35 and Moravia 42-35.
Five area girls’ wrestlers ranked
The second release of Rokfin’s girls’ wrestling rankings opened the new year. Several area wrestlers ranked in the top 12 in their weight classes.
Iowa Valley’s Raelene Hawkins had the highest ranking, coming in at third at the 170-pound division. Teammate Skyler Hoyt was 11th at 125.
Williamsburg’s Keston Spratt was ranked sixth at 120, while Valerie Altenhofen was 12th at 140 for the Raiders.
BGM’s Taya Sincox was 10th at 130.
