MARENGO — With a large incoming freshman class, numbers will be up this season for the Iowa Valley girls wrestling team.
Iowa Valley and HLV will continue their cooperative agreement this season.
“Considering that we have a larger team, I am hopeful that we can be more competitive as a team and in our conference overall,“ second-year coach Lucas Krakow said.
The Tigers return two state qualifiers from last season in Raelene Hawkins (170 pounds) and Skyler Hoyt (130).
Hawkins earned medalists honors, coming in seventh, and will look to become a four-time South Iowa Cedar League champion this season. It would be Iowa Valley’s first in program history.
Kodie Holcomb (135) also returns this season as a conference champion for the Tigers.
Hawkins (5th), Hoyt (9th) and Holcomb (11th) are all ranked in the IAwrestle poll in Class 1A.
The team’s newcomers include Maggie Kriegel, who comes in as an AAU state champion.
“I am excited to see our team continue to grow and live up to the high expectations that I know many of them have for themselves,” Krakow said. “These ladies work hard, and it shows in their conditioning on the mat.”
Iowa Valley opens its season Tuesday, Nov. 18 at BGM in a four-team dual.
