GRINNELL — In the winter season, it’s important to take proactive measures to protect your health and well-being. With plummeting temperatures, icy roads and heavy snowfall, the risk of accidents and illnesses increases significantly.
Stay safe and healthy this winter with these tips.
Wear warm clothing. Layer your clothing to trap heat. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, followed by insulating layers and a waterproof outer layer.
Protect your extremities. Wear a hat, gloves, and scarf to keep your head, hands and neck warm.
Choose the right footwear. Wear boots with good traction to prevent slips and falls.
Drink plenty of water. Even though you may not feel as thirsty in cold weather, it's important to stay hydrated.
Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol. These substances can dehydrate you.
Consume fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These foods are packed with essential vitamins and minerals. They also help boost your immune system.
"Winter can be a challenging time for our health,” says Stacy Kuiper, Grinnell Internal Medicine Clinic provider. “To boost your immune system, get plenty of sleep, manage stress, and consider getting a flu shot. If you experience flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough and sore throat, consult your doctor."
Use a humidifier. Dry winter air can irritate your respiratory system.
Open windows periodically. Fresh air can help reduce indoor pollutants.
Change air filters regularly. This can improve indoor air quality.
"Indoor heat during winter weather can lead to dry air, which can irritate the sinuses and throat,” says Joseph K. Whitman, Grinnell ENT Clinic provider. “Humidification can help add moisture to the air and help alleviate these symptoms."
Be cautious on icy surfaces. Walk slowly and carefully and use handrails when going up or down stairs.
Strengthen your muscles. Regular exercise can help improve balance and coordination, reducing your risk of falls.
Consult with a health care professional. If you have concerns about your balance or risk of falls, talk to your doctor or a physical therapist.
“Winter weather can be tough on the body,” says AnthonyTedesco, a Des Moines Orthopedic Surgeons surgeon who lives in Grinnell and works in the UnityPoint Health-Grinnell Orthopedic Clinic.
“To prevent slips and falls, wear appropriate footwear with good traction. If you do experience a fall, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly, especially if you experience pain, swelling or difficulty moving.”
