Supervisor seeks re-election
Mar. 8, 2024 3:28 pm
Iowa County Constituents,
It’s been my privilege of serving as your county supervisor the past three years. Through my service, I’ve gaiConed a comprehensive understanding of county finances and legislation.
I intend to seek re-election to the Board of Supervisors this year, and kindly ask for your vote. In return, I am offering the facts behind my term of service.
I served on the Board of Health where I discovered and pinpointed a major revenue loss, due to the lack of billing for services provided, by the previous Public Health Department.
I voted no on major building purchases, including the emergency management building, jail kitchen and engineers office. I also voted responsibly on ARPA (federal COVID money) usage.
My intention with one-time funding was to spend it on necessary projects that would save future taxpayer dollars, not generate more.
Using “free” funding on more buildings/infrastructure only costs future taxpayer dollars in maintenance.
I voted yes to spending these funds on necessary courthouse maintenance, which saved over $1.75 million in future property taxes.
I’ve played a key role in managing the county health insurance plans, controlling renewal increases while keeping competitive coverage.
I voted no on allowing the chairperson to control the agenda for the entire BOS.
When members of the board considered taking the Engineer’s office out of the county seat, which is illegal per Iowa Code, I voted no. The County Attorney gave an official opinion on the matter, and when the same members voted to seek another attorney’s opinion, I voted no.
I also voted against the implementation of the Urban Renewal Plan/TIFF of the industrial wind turbines because I was against the limitations of expending those property tax dollars.
My intention was to potentially provide property tax relief to our other constituents with this funding.
Electronic meetings and recordings were frequent agenda items, and I voted yes every single time.
My voting record proves my dedication to legislating the county based on facts and common sense.
If reelected, I will continue to pursue what is best for the taxpayers and stabilize spending to the best of my ability. I am hopeful to find ways to streamline county services and am actively seeking collaboration with other entities.
I am always available and willing to entertain any questions and concerns and can be best reached via phone, which is listed on the county website.
Sincerely,
Iowa County Supervisor Abigail Maas
