AMANA — TheatreMidwest brings “The Gull,” by Zachary Cohnl to The Amana Performing Arts Center Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
The play is an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s 1896 play “The Seagull,” reconfigured as a tour-de-force undertaking for one actor, said TKM Theatrical Productions in a press release.
“The Gull” stars Oklahoma State professor and professional actor Joan Korte.
In “The Seagull,” a young woman is desperate for fame and a way out. A young man is pining after the woman of his dreams. A successful writer longs for a sense of achievement. An actress wants to fight the changing of the times.
In an isolated home in the countryside, dreams lie in tatters, hopes are dashed, and hearts broken. With nowhere left to turn and nothing to do, the only option is to turn on each other.
In this brand new, hilarious, and touching piece, Cohn tears away any musty old remnants of “The Seagull” by having all 10 characters portrayed by one actor, said the press release.
It's a robust, 90-minute journey and includes a narrator to manage the chaos and provide snarky commentary.
While it's a comedy, this production includes discussions about and theatricalized interpretations of bird shooting and suicide and is not suitable for young audiences, said TKM.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for students using the promo code STUDENT.
