MANCHESTER — Claire Kleinmeyer earned her first varsity girls’ golf medal last week.
Kleinmeyer added another medal to that collection Monday at the WaMaC Supermeet at Pin Oak Pub & Links in Manchester, earning second team all-conference honors.
More importantly, Kleinmeyer delivered a clutch birdie on her last hole of the day to help Williamsburg seal a runner-up finish.
“It felt really good after not really playing well on the back nine, but I was glad I was able to help the team,” Kleinmeyer said.
Three strokes separated the top three teams in a tightly contested team battle on the back nine of players’ rounds.
Solon won with a 359, Williamsburg second with 361 and Benton Community third, with a 362.
It is the Raiders second consecutive season finishing runner-up.
The Raiders also had three first team all-conference honorees who finished top 10 on the day.
Rubianne Allison finished third overall, shooting a 85 on the par-71, which included two birdies.
“I started off with a quad (bogey), it was depressing, but then I went to the next hole and got a birdie,” said Allison on her round. “I told myself to just see where the rest of the day goes.”
Next for the Raiders was Demi Horvath, who finished eighth with a 90.
“I knew I was doing good near the end of my round, so I was then putting pressure on myself, but it didn’t amount to anything,” said Horvath.
Horvath’s 90 was a18-hole season best.
Kenzi Driscoll rounded out the top 10 with a 93, as the Raiders four scorers all finished top 11.
“We’re confident in our depth,” Williamsburg coach Todd Subbert said. “We have six kids that can score and that makes a different when a lot of teams don’t have that.”
The Raiders will be heading into regionals next Wednesday, May 21 with good vibes, as they look to qualify for state on their home course.
“We feel good and confident,” Allison said. “We’re all in it together.”
Being two strokes away from the top team on paper at their regional, is an added boost of confidence.
“We feel good that we were two strokes away from Solon,” said Subbert. “We got some time to work on stuff, and we’ll be ready to roll.
