Iowa County residents (they declined to give their names) read the Bible aloud on the lawn of the Iowa County Courthouse in Marengo. Volunteers will read six to 12 hours a day until they’ve read the entire Bible aloud. Iowa County supervisors approved the event after Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation last month encouraging Iowans to read the Bible in front of the courthouses in all 99 Iowa counties. President Andrew Jackson called the Bible the rock on which our republic rests, and President Abraham Lincoln called it the best gift God has given to man, the Proclamation says.
