Tiger track launches promising season

The Iowa Valley high school boys’ track and field team is off to a fast start. The Tigers are one of the top teams in southeast Iowa and are ranked #5 in class 1A by the Cedar Rapids Gazette. They finished 10th in the 2022 state track meet and are expected to finish well this year. This year’s team is led by senior sprinters Evan Kearney, Clayton Kinzenbaw, Pierce Kientiz and sophomore Caleb Haack, who also is one of states top high jumpers.

The team competed in the BGM Invitational on April 18. Evan Kearney won the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and anchored IVHS to first place in the 4x200 meter relay plus a second place finish in the 4x100 meter relay. Clayton Kinzenbaw finished second in the 100 meter dash and the 4x100 relay. Caleb Haack and Pierce Kienitz both ran on the 4x100 meter and 4x200 meter relay.

Other IVHS finishes included Josh Read, second in the high jump and third in the 110 meter high hurdles and fifth in the 400 meter hurdles; Kienitz, fourth in the 200 meter dash; Jeffrey Crawford, fourth in the 400 meter dash; Garrett Hoyt, fifth in shot put and fifth in the discus; Haack, fifth, tie, in the high jump; Ayden Hollister, sixth in the 1600 meter run.

IVHS also placed fourth in the 4x400 relay and fifth in the 1600 meter distance medley relay. IVHS placed fourth in the team scoring. Strong head winds hampered the times.

Ruth Ahrens Boys Invitational

Iowa Valley finished fourth in the Ruth Ahrens Boys Invitational in Marengo on April 11. Evan Kearney won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.54 seconds and Caleb Haack was second at 11.91. Jeffery Crawford finished fifth in the 400 meter dash at 59.34 seconds. Taite Peach was fourth in the 800 meter run at 2.13.81 seconds.

Josh Read, a top freshman, was fifth in the 110 meter high hurdles at 19.77 seconds; Ayden Hollister, another promising freshman, was third in the 3200 meter run at 12.26.75 minutes; Garrett Hoyt was fifth in the discus throw at 97’5” and fourth in the shot put at 39’5.5.” Caleb Haack won the high jump at 6’2” and Josh Read was third at 5’10”.

Iowa Valley won three relay races, 4x100 M at 44.18, 4x200 at 1:33.17 and the 800 M sprint medley at 1:40.23. Iowa Valley placed 5th in the 4x400 M relay at 4:06.42.

Bobcat Invitational

Iowa Valley boys’ and girls’ track teams competed at the Bobcat Invitational at Van Horne April 13. Sophomore Lydia Kriegel was second place at 107’ in the discus throw. Caleb Haack won the high jump at 5’10” and Evan Kearney was second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.86 seconds.
