WILLIAMSBURG — It was the Meadow Lane show Monday night as the Williamsburg and Colfax-Mingo girls soccer teams kicked off their seasons.
Lane scored all four goals for the Tigerhawks en route to a shutout of the Raiders in Williamsburg.
“Definitely not the result we wanted, but the effort was there,“ Williamsburg coach Tim Jones said.
The Raiders were on the defensive for much of the first half, but the back-line and goalkeeper London Cook held firm.
Cook is a returning all-conference player and senior leader for the Raiders. “She’s lights out,” Jones said.
The Raiders also have a starter in their back-line who will be back soon, Jones said.
The Tigerhawks had 14 shots on goal compared to the Raiders zero.
It was knotted at zero until the very last seconds when Lane broke free with a one-on-one with Cook and scored with one second remaining in the half.
Cook had 11 saves in the first half for the Raiders.
The defensive battle continued for the first portion of the second half, and the Raiders were finally able to break free a little bit offensively.
The Raiders were able to get three shots on goal in the second half, but struggled to consistently get deep into the Tigerhawks’ defense for quality looks.
Off a corner kick from Lily Webster, Lane scored again at the 27:07 mark. She added late goals at 6:48 and 2:13 in the second half.
Cook added seven more saves in the second half for the Raiders, and the Tigerhawks totaled 32 shots on goal.
Colfax-Mingo had previously been in a co-op with other schools, so this marks the program’s first win ever.
The Raiders’ postgame huddle was quick to flush this match with their heads held high. The girls move on to the next contest.
“We got girls that have not played a lot of ball, so their touch is a little hard,” Jones said. “That is hard to clean up until he season gets going. It’s just going to take us some time.”
The young Raiders are motivated and ready to put in the work this season to improve on last year.
“I’m encouraged,” Jones said. “ The main thing is just resilience and continuing to buy in.”
