DES MOINES — Five area relay teams competed in the 2025 Drake Relays at Drake Stadium in Des Moines this week.
The Iowa Valley boys 4x400-meter relay was the only Class 1A school in the field of 24.
In the preliminaries Friday night, the Tigers quartet, Layne Peska, Nolan Kriegel, Jeffrey Crawford and Caleb Haack, finished in 3:25.44.
That was good enough for 17th place.
The boys and girls 4x100 prelims were Saturday morning. The top 96 entries made the field.
All three area qualifiers finished near the middle of the pack.
On the boys’ side, Williamsburg finished 56th and Iowa Valley 67th. The Williamsburg girls finished 58th.
Williamsburg freshman Ellie Nielsen completed no jump over five feet, two inches in the girls’ high jump. Nielsen was the only freshman who qualified in the event.
English Valleys’ Gage Heyne came in as the only Class 1A qualifier in the boys’ 1,600.
Heyne placed 21st with a time of 4:41.72 in the race, gutting out a stomach bug. Heyne’s season best of 4:19.82 is the top time in 1A by nearly 11 seconds.
