COLFAX — The Iowa Valley boys track and field team had one goal above the others coming into this postseason: defending their South Iowa Cedar League title.
The Tigers did that, scoring 142 points Tuesday at Colfax-Mingo High School and topping second place Lynnville-Sully by 29 points.
“It took a lot of adversity (tonight). We got some guys banged up, others sick, but we came out knowing we had the target at our back and got the job done,” senior Caleb Haack said.
“We had tough competition, but did what we had to do tonight,” Jeffrey Crawford said.
Six event titles (three individual, three relays) paved the way for the Tigers’ team title.
Haack swept the 100 and 200-meter races and anchored the Tigers’ winning 4x200-meter and 4x400 relay teams.
Layne Peska added a victory in the 400, giving the Tigers a sweep of the sprint races.
Now the Tigers set their sights on qualifying for state as a team, with trophy potential in Class 1A.
In terms of improvement, Belle Plaine’s Lane Vokoun’s night would be hard to top.
The Plainsmen senior set three new personal bests.
First was in the long jump, where Vokoun jumped 21 feet, 8 1/2 inches, which is tied for third in 1A after Tuesday.
“I changed my form a little bit in long jump and tweaked it,” Vokoun said. “With that, I’ve been able to get over 21 (feet) every time. I think 22 feet was attainable tonight, but I scratched twice.”
Vokoun then broke the 15-second barrier in the 110 hurdles and now ranks sixth in 1A.
Vokoun also anchored the Plainsmen’s winning shuttle hurdle relay, which finished in 1:01.80, the fifth fastest time in 1A so far this season.
Lynnville-Sully and Iowa Valley were not too far behind, posting top-10 times.
Belle Plaine finished third as a team with 106 points; English Valleys finished fourth with 94 1/2.
Other notable area performances
• For the second-straight season, English Valleys’ Gage Heyne swept the distance races and went 4-4 on the evening. Heyne won the 3,200, 800, 1,600 and anchored the Bears’ winning distance medley team.
In his last race of the evening, Heyne ran a solo-effort 4:23.38 in the 1,600.
• Belle Plaine’s Sam DeMeulenaere ran another sub 56 in the 400-hurdles, winning in 55.85. Also in the race, Iowa Valley’s Chance Hoyt and HLV-TC’s Aiden Van Waus, ran personal bests and both are now in the top 12 in 1A.
• BGM took home the title in the 4x100 in 44.91 and placed sixth as a team with 53 points.
