NORTH ENGLISH — The Iowa Valley boys wrestling team dominated the field Nov. 30 in a battle of conference foes in North English. The Tigers defeated HLV 60-18, BGM 60-24, and English Valleys-Tri County 58-12.
Only six of the fourteen weights were contested against HLV, with Iowa Valley winning four. All six matches were determined by fall. Notching the pins for Iowa Valley were Chance Hoyt (144), Nolan Kriegel (157), Mason Hoyt (165) and Taite Peach at 215. HLV winners were Brody Sternhagen (150) and Cole Fontinel at 285.
Against BGM, the Tigers won six of the nine matches. Iowa Valley winners were Robert Olson (120, fall 0:26), Jeffrey Crawford (132, inj. default), Dane Smith (150, fall 5:59), Kriegel (fall 0:23), Peach (fall 1:34) and Garrett Hoyt (285, fall 1:26).
English Valleys-Tri County was up next, and Iowa Valley took eight of nine matches.
English Valleys’ Jack Osborn notched EVTC’s only win with a fall at 132 in 1:56. Iowa Valley captured the rest of the duals. Robert Olson (126, fall 2:20), Karter Thiessen (138, fall 3:01), Hoyt (fall 0:51), Dane Smith (12-4 major), Kriegel (fall 3:36), Mason Hoyt (fall 0:38), Ian Smith (175, fall 1:05), and Dawson Smith (190, fall 2:52) rounded out the scoring.
Over the weekend, Iowa Valley traveled to a tough Jesup dual tournament.
“They competed well and continue to work toward their goals,” said Iowa Valley Coach Jeremy Kriegel.
“Nolan Kriegel finished the week 9-0 with nine pins. He knows he still has a lot of work to do in the practice room to get to where he needs to be at the end of the year,” said the coach.
“Garrett Hoyt went 8-1 at HWT. He can be one of the better heavyweights if he continues to improve and work hard.
“Mason Hoyt went 4-1, Taite Peach and Chance Hoyt went 7-2 on the week. Jeffrey, Dane, Ian, and Dawson had a good week of tough matches also,” said Jeremy Kriegel.
“This team is one of the close-knit groups we’ve had in a while. They are all willing to push each other. They all have a great bond and are really fun to be around and work with.”
Girls Wrestling
The Iowa Valley girls’ wrestling team also traveled to North English for a pair of conference duals Nov. 30. The Tigers took down BGM 30-24 before falling to English Valleys — Tri County 12-6.
Iowa Valley recorded a pair of pins versus BGM. Up first was the Tiger’s Skyler Hoyt at 125, who took care of business in 1:25. Raelene Hawkins notched her fall in 3:13 at 190.
All other matches were forfeits or double forfeits. The only contested match against EVTC resulted in an injury default win for Hoyt.
On Saturday, the Tiger grapplers threw on the singlets for the Willard Howell Invite in Wapello.
Kylie Loffer (100) went 2-1 and took 3rd. Hoyt claimed 2nd with a 2-1 record. Dakota Pederson went 2-2 on the day. Raelene Hawkins (170) and Breanna Peach (235) both went undefeated and earned 1st place.
“Our girls team continues to work very hard and improve each week. I couldn’t ask for a better group to work with,” said Iowa Valley Coach Kriegel.
“They had a long day at Wapello and competed very well. It was great to see Breanna and Raelene pin their way through the tournament.
“Skyler had a big day making the finals, beating some tough girls,” said Kriegel. “Kylie continues to improve and was able to make the podium. Dakota worked very hard to get down a weight class and was able to win a couple matches.”
