MARENGO — Lydia Kriegel scored 25 points and Myla Frimml added 20 to fuel the first win of the season for the Tiger girls’ basketball team.
Iowa Valley defeated Keota 64-50 Friday night.
“The two of them had a dynamite game,” Iowa Valley coach Janet Holst-Behrens said of Kriegel and Frimml. The Tigers played their best all-around game of the season so far through five games.
“I thought our kids did a really good job of not letting those first four games get in our head,” Holst-Behrens said. “They did a good job of seeing what they gave us with their 2-3 zone.”
When the Eagles extended their zone full-court, the Tigers did a good job of beating it, leading to layups and transition baskets, which Lydia Kriegel capitalized on.
Frimml did most of her damage in the Tigers’ half-court offense, executing many post moves on her way to a season-high 22 points.
“Myla was disappointed in how she played last game,” Holst-Behrens said. “I knew she was going to come out and take it to them. She’s difficult to guard and has good hands underneath the basket.”
After beginning the game on an 8-1 run, the Tigers led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.
A long second quarter, filled with many fouls and free-throw attempts, brought the Tigers to a 31-27 lead at the half.
Layups from Alannah McKibben and Lydia Kriegel — off a steal — increased the Tigers’ lead to 10, 27-17.
The Eagles were able to close the deficit to four before half.
“We had three starters sitting on the bench with two fouls at the end of the half,” Holst-Behrens said. “We pulled some kids into some big minutes with the goal of maintaining that lead.”
Maintaining a halftime lead was crucial for the Tigers.
Cameron Haifley started the third with a steal and layup for the Eagles to cut the deficit to two, but the game never got closer after that.
Four different Tigers scored in the third, including Izzy Kriegel, who picked up four of her nine total points in that quarter.
The Tigers took a nine-point lead into the fourth.
In the final quarter, the Tigers extended their lead to 16 before winning the game 64-50.
Both Emily Conger and Elyse Lyle scored 11 points to lead the Eagles.
“It’s a process, but I feel like we have a lot of good things starting to happen,“ Holst-Behrens said.
Kriegel hits 1,000 point landmark
The Tigers lost their previous game 53-30 to English Valleys, but senior Lydia Kriegel hit the 1,000 point milestone.
Kriegel has started for the Tigers all four years of high school and has been a consistent scorer through her career.
Kriegel scored 285 points her freshman year, 322 her sophomore year and 321 last season.
Kriegel has 98 points through five games this season.
