BROOKLYN — The Iowa Valley girls’ wrestling team won all three of its duals at the BGM quad Monday night in Brooklyn to kick off their season.
Competitions began statewide Monday night.
“I thought we performed well as a group,” Iowa Valley head coach Lucas Krakow said. “We were really excited to get the girls out here. We’ve been working at it for two weeks.”
Krakow is in his first-year as the head varsity coach. He was a junior high coach last season.
“It’s been a good transition,” Krakow said. “A lot to learn this year, but Coach Kriegel (assistant and head boys’ coach) has been a great mentor.
The Tigers’ closest dual came in the first of the night. Iowa Valley defeated BGM by three.
A first-period pin from Raelene Hawkins in the 190 pound division sealed the victory for the Tigers.
Kodie Holcomb and Claire Smolik also went 3-0 on the night for the Tigers with two by pin and one by forfeit.
The English Valleys girls’ went 2-1 on the night in duals, edging BGM in the final dual of the night by a point.
The dual ended in a tie, but English Valleys won the tiebreaker criteria of first points scored.
Anna Gorsh looked especially strong for the Bears on the evening, with two wins by pin on the evening.
Emily Sieren, Betsy Wells and Chrsity Knapp also grabbed first period pin victories for the Bears.
“I’m overall happy with the performance,” English Valleys head coach Steve Hester said. “We were aggressive in all our matches.”
The BGM girls’ went 1-2 in their duals.
Taya Sincox was one of two wrestlers on the night who was faced a competitor in all three duals in the 130 pound division.
The Bears’ senior made the most of it, winning all three matches, two by pin and one by tech fall.
In the tech-fall victory, Sincox scored 18 points, highlighting her ability to score quickly with multiple takedowns.
The common theme of the night was winning via a pin (fall). Of the 21 non-forfeited matches on the night, 19 ended by pin.
The nicest pin of the night went to Iowa Valley’s Skyler Hoyt. Hoyt was down 7-1 in a match against English Valleys Knapp but used a nice corkscrew move to get the pin in the first period.
