MARENGO — The Iowa Valley girls track and field improved greatly within the conference last season.
After finishing 10th out of 12 teams in 2023, the Tigers placed fifth last season with 59 1/2 team points at the South Iowa Cedar League meet.
“I was thrilled with the 2024 season,” Iowa Valley coach Marissa Krakow said. “We had a huge jump up in our conference.”
The Tigers qualified for state in three events as well.
Lydia Kriegel qualified in two of those events.
Kriegel took home gold in the Class 1A discus with a throw of 135 feet and three inches (41.22m).
The Tigers senior, and Wartburg College commit, added a 10th place finish in the shot put.
The Tigers’ 4x800-meter relay team qualified for state last year, but only one member of that quartet returns this season — Emma Von Lienen. The team took home the conference title in the event last season too.
Von Lienen will be a key contributor this season for the Tigers.
The Tigers also return some key sprinters and relay runners in Kennedy Thiessen, Michaela Schachtlie and Maeci Marshall.
“I am excited to have a big group of freshmen coming in because we lost five seniors last year, so we have a lot of spots on relays that are open for the taking,” Krakow said.
Krakow wants the team to follow the natural progression of the season and not get ahead of themselves.
“We want to keep moving up in the conference,“ said Krakow. ”Of course I have a goal of getting my girls up to state to run on the blue oval, but we have to take it one meet at a time.
“If we get too far ahead of ourselves, we lose sight of the journey we must take in order to run at the blue oval.”
The Tigers opened up their season today at the IATC Indoor Championships and will also run in two other indoor meets.
The outdoor season kicks off April 1 at Belle Plaine.
