BELLE PLAINE — Mason Hoyt’s four RBIs and Caleb Haack’s 14 strikeouts led the charge for the Iowa Valley Tigers in the soggy, rainy conditions against Belle Plaine Wednesday night.
“Mason was due for a big day, and it was great to see him hit the gaps,” Iowa Valley head coach Sam Rohovit said.
“Him finally getting hot is huge for us.”
It was also Belle Plaine’s Cancer Awareness Night, presented by Compass Memorial Healthcare.
The goal is to raise funds for the Hope For All campaign that helps families effected by cancer financially.
Through two innings this game was a pitching duel with some good defensive plays.
Iowa Valley got a few on base via walk, but nothing materialized.
Caleb Haack remained perfect through three innings allowing no hits or walks.
In the top of the third, the game was delayed 25 minutes due to heavy rain.
The Tigers scored two runs in the extended inning coming off a wild pitch and a throwing error.
Dane Smith got the Tigers started in the fourth with an infield single. Haack then brought a runner in on a fielder’s choice, and an errant throw brought in another.
An error brought one more run in off the bat of Mason Hoyt.
Belle Plaine got its first hit of the game in the bottom of fourth with a single by Wade Sankot.
Sankot made his way around the bases and scored off a dropped pitch at the plate.
Wade’s twin brother Will also got a single in the inning.
Will had a nice catch in the top of the fifth from the catcher position on a fly out.
Haack got two more strikeouts in the bottom of the fifth.
The effective use of his curveball was a common occurrence for Haack in the evening. Haack struck out several batters using the pitch.
“Caleb knows what he can throw, and Layne does a great job managing from behind the plate,” Rohovit said.
A two-RBI double from Mason Hoyt and an RBI single from Owen Bral extended the Tiger lead to 8-1 after the top of the sixth.
The Tigers added four more in the seventh. Mason Hoyt added hit a two-RBI double followed by a Bral RBI single to make it 12-1.
The Plainsmen got one base runner on in the sixth and seventh.
“Credit to Iowa Valley, that’s a solid team over there,” Belle Plaine head coach Matthew Mengler said.
“We had some compounded errors, but I thought we had some decent at-bats.”
The Tigers reached the double digit win total following the game and are now 8-3 in conference play.
“It was awesome to see them battle through the conditions tonight.” Rohovit said.
Belle Plaine will face off against Keota, who they beat in extra innings in their last meeting, Friday.

Denisyn Adams led the charge for the Plainsmen’s bats with four RBIs.
