MARENGO — The Iowa Valley Tigers football team cruised to a 70-16 win over English Valleys Friday night.
The win put the Tigers also at 3-0 in 8-player District 6 play and one step closer to a District title.
“We came out and did what we needed to do,” Iowa Valley head coach Casey Krull said.
“We had a lot of guys step up this week with some guys dinged up here and there, so it was really good to see those guys play at a high level.”
It took no time for the Tigers’ offense to get rolling as they scored on their first three offensive snaps of the game — a Nolan Kriegel 50-yard run, a 67 yard receiving touchdown from Kriegel to Owen Bral and a 36 yard run from Layne Peska.
Just like that, it was 24-0.
The Tigers’ defense forced two straight punts and a turnover on downs as the Bears offense struggled to get anything going.
The fourth offensive snap was not a touchdown for the Tigers, but it began a 72-yard scoring drive that ended with an 18-yard passing touchdown to Caleb Haack.
A pick-six from Carter Hassebroek put the Tigers’ defense in the scoring column in the second quarter.
Haack added another receiving touchdown from 26 yards out to make it 48-0 at halftime.
English Valleys’ Everett Bender returned a kickoff for a touchdown late in the half for the Bears, but the play was called back on a block-in-the-back penalty.
With the Tigers up by more than 35, the running clock was on for the entire second half.
The first snap of the second half was another touchdown run from Peska, this time from 55 yards out.
After that, the Tigers rolled out their second stringers at many positions.
Chance Hoyt added a score from 35 yards out on the ground which made it 62-0 in the third quarter.
The Bears got on the scoreboard via the legs of Braydon Anderson as he ran it in from 38 yards late in the third.
Another kickoff returned for a touchdown was called back on the Bears due to a penalty late in the fourth.
After the penalty, the legs of Anderson helped the Bears drive down the field and score one more time — on a one-yard fun from Teagan Mast.
The Tigers have a bye week coming up. With the team dealing with a few injuries, it comes at a good time.
“The bye week is at the right time for us,” Krull said. “Hopefully we can get guys healthy and recovered.”
The Tigers have a lot confidence heading into their next game against Winfield-Mt. Union.
“I think the win against WACO earlier in the season gave our guys a lot of confidence and showed that if we play at a high level, we’re capable of a lot of great things,” Krull said.
The Bears fell to 1-3 on the season and will play Winfield Mt. Union Friday.
