LONE TREE — It was hot to start the game Friday night in Lone Tree as the thermometer was still reading in the low 90s.
Iowa Valley was also hot to start the game.
The biggest difference between the temperature and the Tigers? The temperature cooled off, the Tigers did not. Iowa Valley rolled over the Lone Tree Lions by a final score of 60—14.
“We had a great team win,” said Tiger Coach Casey Krull. “Our offensive and defensive lines were very physical and dominated up front. They allowed our backfield to have a lot of success.”
There was plenty of success to go around. The Iowa Valley offense had the ball for nine drives and ended eight of them with touchdowns. The ninth drive ended with two knees and the victory formation as time expired at the end of the game.
The clock, as it turned out, was the only thing that could stop the Tigers.
Defensively, Iowa Valley did give up two fourth quarter scores, but the game had long been decided. The other Lions drives resulted in four punts, one turnover on downs and a Chance Hoyt interception at the Lions 30 that turned into a one-play scoring drive for the Tigers on a Dane Smith run.
That’s freshman Hoyt and freshman Smith.
Freshmen stood out all over the field for the Tigers, but perhaps none bigger than the starting freshman phenom quarterback Nolan Kriegel.
Kriegel rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 71 yards including a beauty of a first quarter, 25-yard bomb to Caleb Haack to open the scoring.
Haack finished the night with three catches for 71 yards. Dawson Smith rushed for an average of 7.5 yards per carry to gain 82 yards and score three touchdowns.
”Dawson Smith and Nolan Kriegel both had really good games offensively,” continued Krull. “Defensively we played really well. We had a lot of guys step up and make plays.”
Dawson Smith led the way for the Tiger defense with seven tackles, five solo.
Offensively Iowa Valley finished with 375 rush yards and 71 pass yards for a total of 446 total yards. Iowa Valley converted six two-point conversions.
Defensively, the Tigers recorded 36.5 tackles with one sack and five tackles for loss. The defense had one interception. Special teams kicked for 318 yards.
There was one punt return for five yards and one kick return for 15.
Iowa Valley moves to 2-0 on the season while Lone Tree falls to 1-1. The Tigers travel to Wayland Friday to face the 1-0 WACO Warriors.
Final Lone Tree stats were not available at press time.
