Tigers will host Plainsmen in first-round

Six area baseball teams now know their first-round postseason matchups for Saturday, July 5.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released baseball district and substate brackets in Classes 1A and 2A Wednesday.

The highlight of those matchups is an in-conference battle as Belle Plaine travels to Marengo to play Iowa Valley in 1A Substate 4 District 8.

The two teams, who have yet to face each other this season, will meet next Wednesday, in a game that was postponed earlier this season.

In the same district, BGM, listed as the home team, will face GMG at East Buchanan High School in Winthrop.

The Bears sit third in the South Iowa Cedar League standings with a 7-2 record.

The other three area teams in 1A are in Substate 5 District 9.

Montezuma will face Lone Tree in Lisbon, and the winner of that game will face top seed Sigourney.

In a doubleheader at Highland, HLV-TC will play Hillcrest Academy, and English Valleys will play Highland immediately after.

At least one area winner will advance to second-round games July 8.

Two districts make up a substate. Winners of each district will face off in a substate final to determine who will advance to state.

Class 3A assignments, which will include Williamsburg, will be released next week.
