DES MOINES — Belle Plaine’s Aidan Timm fought to the very last second, and he was rewarded, winning 9-8 in a Class 1A 138-pound quarterfinal match at the Iowa High School Athletic Association Boys State Wrestling Tournament Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Timm advanced to the semifinals, clinching a medal.
Heading into the third-period, Timm was trailing 7-1. Down 8-4 with 15 seconds remaining, Timm got a last second takedown and two near fall points for the victory.
“We knew we needed multiple takedowns and back points, and we found a way as time expired,” Belle Plaine coach Brandon Heying said.
Timm’s teammate Wade Sankot, also advanced to day three, winning both of his consolation matches.
The seven-seed lost his first match at 157 but bounced back, and with a win today in the next round of consolations, he can contend for a medal Saturday.
The other area quarterfinalist was Montezuma’s Braxton Plants at 215. Plants was pinned by two-seed Nathan Beitz and advances to today’s consolations.
For other area wrestlers on day two in Class 1A, it was all about living to fight another day. Wrestlers in consolation matches had to win two matches to advance to the next day.
The Iowa Valley trio, Chance Hoyt, Mason Hoyt and Nolan Kriegel, put on a strong display going 5-1 in consolations Thursday.
Chance and Mason advanced to today’s consolations with dominating wins.
Chance Hoyt, at 150, won his two matches by major decision and tech fall, and Mason Hoyt had the same results.
Nolan Kriegel went 1-1 on the day, concluding his season with a 44-9 record at 175.
“The Hoyt boys opened up today and wrestled their matches,” Iowa Valley coach Jeremy Kriegel said. “They continue to get better and better as the tournament goes on, and they gave themselves a chance to wrestle for a medal.”
BGM’s Hunter Hodina won his second-round consolation match but fell in the next round to Lynnville-Sully’s Jett Kramer.
Hodina, now a two-time qualifier, finishes 2-2 at state and 46-7 for the season at 113.
HLV-TC’s Cael Weisskopf went 1-2 at 150 in his state debut for the Warriors.
Only a sophomore, Weisskopf will look to build on his successful 36-10 campaign.
Six area wrestlers will wrestle today in day three in Class 1A.
