DES MOINES — Ten area wrestlers started their journeys in the Class 1A second-session at the Iowa High School Athletic Association Boys State Wrestling Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Belle Plaine’s Aidan Timm, at 138-pounds, and Montezuma’s Braxton Plants, at 215, advanced to the quarterfinals, winning their lone matches for the day after receiving first-round byes.
Timm faced East Union’s Joseph Hayes in the second-round and wasted no time getting to his offense.
Timm scored five points before pinning Hayes with a cradle right before the end of the first period.
“I was able to get a cradle that I always go too,” Timm said. “I’m feeling good going into the next round.”
Timm will face three-seed Gabriel Brisker of Wilton in the quarterfinals.
Plants had a similar result, getting a first-period fall over Durant’s Kamdyn Kraklio.
Kraklio appeared to have a takedown, but Plants was able to flip Kraklio around and get the takedown himself before finishing the pin.
“It was a little scrappy at first, but I was able to flip him,” Plants said. “Just got to keep moving and go with the flow.”
Plants will face two-seed Nathan Beitz of Maquoketa Valley in today’s quarterfinals.
Braxton’s brother, Brett, went 1-1 at 190.
Area wrestlers went 6-1 in their first-round matches.
Iowa Valley’s Chance Hoyt, at 150, and Nolan Kriegel, at 175, got second-period falls.
Mason Hoyt, as a higher 20 seed, added a 9-5 decision to put the Tigers at a 3-0 start.
All three were defeated by tough opponents in the second-round, sending them to today’s second-round consolations.
“Getting three wins in the first round was great to see,” Iowa Valley coach Jeremy Kriegel said. “Hopefully we can reset and make a run on the backside.”
Belle Plaine’s Will Sankot won his first match at 144 over Alta/Aurelia’s Hayden Garlow by a 9-5 decision. Wade Sankot had a first-round bye at 157 but fell to 10-seed Chase England of Lenox in the second-round.
Both will be in the second-round consolations today.
BGM’s Hunter Hodina won a16-5 major decision in a 16-17 matchup at 113 pounds before facing top seed Nic Brause of Nashua-Plainfield, and losing by fall.
HLV-TC’s Cael Weisskopf lost a hard-fought first-round match at 150 by a 15-13 decision.
The field of 24 will be cut in half after Thursday, so all area wrestlers in consolations will have to win their second and third-round consolations today to advance to Friday’s matches.
