GRINNELL — UnityPoint Health — Grinnell is offering a new educational class geared toward pregnant and postpartum women.
The prenatal pelvic floor education class will be led by specially trained pelvic floor physical therapists, for a focus on perinatal pelvic floor health.
“Pelvic floor health can drastically impact quality of life,” says KayLynn Osborn, pelvic floor therapist. “Pregnancy and delivery can have a big impact on the pelvic floor, and we want to offer our patients the education, support and therapy resources they deserve during this pivotal time.”
The class will cover common pelvic floor symptoms experienced in pregnancy and following delivery. A pelvic floor therapist will review how pelvic floor physical therapy can address common concerns related to hip and back pain in pregnancy, pelvic pain and incontinence.
Topics will include musculoskeletal driven pain in pregnancy related to hip, back and pelvic floor musculature, preparation for birth as it relates to the pelvic floor, bladder and bowel health, pelvic pain, and abdominal and hip muscle strengthening.
“We want to help empower and inform attendees so they’re ready for the changes this exciting stage of life has in store,” said Maddie Major, pelvic floor therapist. “We’re here to provide education to prepare, strengthen and heal your pelvic floor.”
The educational class will take place starting Jan. 20 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center’s Tomasek Conference Room on the first floor of the medical center at 210 Fourth Ave. in Grinnell. The course will also have a frequently asked questions session and demonstrations of exercises that are safe to be done postpartum.
Visit uph.link/GrinnellClasses for more information and a listing of class dates and times. Individuals do not need to be UnityPoint Health patients to attend.
Pelvic floor therapy is also available for non-perinatal patients. Call UnityPoint Health — Grinnell Rehabilitation Services at 641-236-2953 or talk to a primary care provider for more information.
